Noordeman Diesel Machining Tour

Tour > Cylinder Head Machining Tour

Follow below the processes involved in reconditioning a cylinder head

Step 1

The cylinder heads are stripped and cleaned to ensure an accurate estimate of repairs.

Step 2

Each cylinder head (cast iron) is acid bathed to remove as much carbon and shale from the head.

All the parts are cleaned and assessed as required.

Step 3

The cylinder head is then bead blasted to remove any remaining carbon and rust.

Step 4

The cylinder head is then Lectro Magnaflux crack tested to locate any cracks in the casting.

Step 5

Each head is then pressure tested with both hot water and air to unsure there are no internal cracks that could result in the cylinder head being unserviceable.

This completes the work required to submit an estimate of repair.

Step 6

Once the customer has given authorisation to continue with the repairs, the work begins.

Inserts are fitted if required and the seats are cut to ensure maximum valve sealing.

Step 7

If the valves don't need replacing, the seat is ground to remove any previous wear and to ensure a good sealing surface.

Step 8

If required the cylinder head is faced to provide a straight and flat surface.

This may also be required if there is any corrosion that may cause the head gasket to fail.

Step 9

After all parts have been cleaned, machined or replaced. The cylinder head is then assembled to the manufacturers specification, ready for installation.
